Funding available for local underage drinking prevention activities

The Washington State Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking (RUaD) is offering stipends for community organizations that want to conduct a Let's Draw the Line Between Youth & Alcohol campaign and/or a town hall meeting about underage drinking.

RUaD has been asked by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to submit the names of 100 Washington communities that would like to host town hall meetings.  Participants will receive a $500 stipend to underwrite costs of the meetings.  Contact RUaD by December 2 if your organization is interested.

Groups can receive a $1000 stipend for conducting a Let's Draw the Line campaign.  Groups may sign up on December 1 by visiting http://www.letsdrawtheline.org/

Outreach to retailers

The Prevention WINS Retail Outreach Workgroup met for the first time yesterday, April 4.

The workgroup decided to send letters to the 80 stores that sell alcohol in northeast Seattle about the high underage drinking rates in our community and asking them to place window clings (pictured at left) on their beer refrigerators.  Since most teenagers in our community report getting alcohol "at a party" or from older friends and siblings, the window clings remind people of possible legal consequences associated with buying alcohol for minors.

The window clings are part of the Let's Draw the Line campaign developed by RUaD -- the Washington State Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking.

The next Retail Outreach Workgroup meeting will take place May 9, 10 a.m., at Seattle Children's.  More workgroup members are needed . . . anyone interested in reducing youth access to alcohol in northeast Seattle is invited to participate.

Show your support for reducing youth exposure to alcohol ads

Thanks in part to input from anti-drug coalitions, the Washington State Liquor Control Board adopted new alcohol advertising rules in April to reduce the amount of ads that young people are exposed to in our communities.

We can, once again, show our support for a reduction in alcohol advertising by signing a Let's Draw the Line Commitment Card. Print and sign a card, get other people you know to sign them, too, and send them to the Prevention WINS coordinator. Our cards will join cards signed by other advocates and raise awareness about alcohol advertising and youth.
